Loss of earnings

You can claim a set amount if attending court as a witness stopped you working and earning money.

If you’re an employee

If you took an unpaid day off work to attend court, you can claim £33.50 for every half day and £67 for every full day you had to go to court and lost earnings.

These payments are not subject to income tax or other statutory deductions.

You will need to provide your employer's details or a payslip.

If you’re self-employed

You can claim up to £42.95 for every half day and £85.90 for every full day you had to go to court and lost earnings.

You will need to upload proof that you are self-employed.

We will accept one of the following:

  • a business card or letterhead with full name and business name
  • a copy of your tax return to HMRC
  • a letter from your accountant confirming you're self-employed
  • a copy of your sub-contractors certificate issued by HMRC
  • a copy of your Hackney Carriage Licence
  • a letter from the company for which you are currently subcontracting to confirm that you are self-employed
